New Zealand's population is quickly increasing which is causing strains on current power networks. Due to a higher populous demand for power, The Te Uku Wind Farm Project was initiated between Meridian Energy and WEL Networks LTD, to increase power capacity with eco-friendly capabilities. The wind farm project was a shared effort and contracted to the UGL Balfour Beatty Joint Venture.
The objective of the wind farm was to provide an eco-sustainable power solution that could provide significant increases in electricity to 30,000 New Zealand homes.
The UGL Solution
The power generation project was completed with 28 wind turbines on a 55.8 kilometer property which also serves as a private owned sheep and cattle farm. But the UGL joint venture had to first install 26 kilometers of road to transport the wind turbines on the property and construct 17 kilometers of new 33kV transmission line to connect the wind farm. The wind turbines were manufactured in two locations: towers were made in Korea and the turbines were made in Denmark.
When the wind turbines were shipped to New Zealand, they were able to be transported and installed properly. The wind farm was able to meet the needs of Meridian Energy to supply power to 30,000 new homes in New Zealand. In addition, the project was completed within the time constraints specified by Meridian Energy and provides for an economical way to provide power throughout the region.
