UGL was brought on to help the project regarding the Sino Iron Ore by supporting CITIC Pacific Mining. This iron ore project is the biggest magnetite mining and processing operation in Australia. CITIC Pacific Mining needed to find a supplier who could handle a comprehensive mining infrastructure where immediate and future growth was possible. They also needed a solution to construct a complete power station from desalination plant transmission lines.
In order for the whole project to be successful, CITIC Pacific Mining needed advanced filtration technology that could supply process water with a capacity of 140 mega-liters per day – this would be the equivalent of 56 Olympic-sized pools.
The UGL Solution
UGL is known for delivering large-scale wastewater treatment solutions and taking on the Sino Iron Ore project was among one of the many great projects to date. By using a step-by-step collaborative approach, UGL was able to deliver an ideal solution with in-house engineering resources that was the key to the success of the plant. UGL constructed and commissioned a 51 giga-liter desalination plant to exceed the needs of the original capacity needs. The weight of the plant was supported by concrete foundations with installed underground glass-fiber reinforced plastic pipes to ensure incredible strength.
After implementation, the facility can mine approximately 140 million tons each year and the processing plant can handle about 80 million tons of raw materials. UGL's extensive history and experience helped the project overcome many challenges in the remote region by finding the solutions of many complex electrical, mechanical and instrumentation difficulties.
