Public transportation is a vital necessity in developed countries as it is relied upon by millions of passengers to get from point a to point b. With that being said, public transportation service via passenger trains are among the top choice for travel. Sydney Trains, formally known as RailCorp, serves millions of commuters, approximately 300 million passengers per year with projections of future increases. To meet the needs of current and future commuters, Sydney Trains need to increase their fleet of passenger trains for the CityRail network.
UGL was contracted to supply their demand of additional passenger trains that had an original order of 74 which was later increased to 99 total trains. The order for passenger trains, known as the Outer Suburban Car Electric-Multiple-Unit (Oscar) project (Stage 3) was considered extremely important to sustain adequate public transportation services for the future.
The Solution
UGL was able to deliver the Oscar Stage 3 passenger trains early, which allowed Sydney Trains to have an additional 371 days of revenue service due to the timely delivery. With the early completion, over one year's worth of extra public transportation service benefited Sydney Trains and the taxpayers of New South Wales. This is one of the many economical engineering solutions from UGL that saved a large amount of overhead costs which are passed onto the client and others.
During the construction of the Oscar Stage 3 passenger trains, UGL was able to offer multiple jobs in the area surrounding the UGL manufacturing facility. In addition, many local subcontractors and suppliers were able to assist in the process which improved the involvement of the community and the state of the local economy. With the completion of Oscar State 3, UGL has a continuing partnership with Sydney Trains for future transportation needs.
